The electric car has found its sports

In terms of electric cars, there were until then city cars, roads and SUVs, but no sports saloon. It is now done with this impressive Taycan that allows Porsche to successfully enter the world of the battery car. Attention, it's moving!

Eighteen Taycan Porsters are currently  participating in a 6,440 km road trip across nine countries between Norway and Germany. We slipped, for one step, driving a Taycan Turbo S to test this famous 100% electric Porsche. A journey of some 550 kilometers rich of lessons on this model which carries on his shoulders a great challenge: to transpose the sporting character of Porsche on a battery car.

To design an electric car worthy of its DNA, Porsche started from a blank sheet. The "skateboard" chassis that contains the big battery is specific and it is dressed with a four-door sedan-coupe body whose curves evoke the famous 911 . The proportions of the car are balanced, the cantilevers are short and the headlamps receive the Porsche matrix with the four points to LED as a light signature. The first visual contact is convincing and the Green Manba color of our test model is rather original.

The muscular body of the Taycan is long (4.96 m), wide (1.97 m) and low (1.38 m). As with the 911, we "go down" in the car and we find a cabin with a sporty atmosphere close to that of the iconic coupe. The luxury does not show as much as in a Panamera, but the perceived quality is obvious and place is made to the digital.

The curved screen behind the steering wheel is the most beautiful effect and the two touch panels in the center can control all the functions of the car. Porsche is a little too much on the screens with the slab in front of the passenger who is anyway optional. More annoying, useless technology is sometimes involved, like the ventilation grids that can only be directed by searching through the screens menus ... infuriating when it is so simple to do it at the hand. The two rear seats do not offer as much ease as those of a Panamera , but they are quite welcoming and Porsche has dug cavities in the floor-battery to preserve the legroom and correct posture.

The Taycan comes in two versions Turbo and Turbo S that share the same lithium-ion battery with a voltage of 800 volts (twice the competition) and a capacity of 93.4 kW. Each version is equipped with two asynchronous electric motors (one per axle) and a two-speed gearbox. Porsche does not communicate the nominal power of its Taycan, only that under overboost: 625 hp for both versions for 10 s, then 680 hp for the Turbo and 761 hp for the Turbo S for 2.5 s. It's time to take the wheel, reading the rates is fast and discouraging: 155 552 € for the Taycan Turbo and 189 152 € for the Turbo S whose standard equipment receives the equivalent of 17 600 € of options on the Turbo (see the Taycan Porsche prices ). At this price level, the ecological bonus of € 6,000 is anecdotal blow.
